Director’s Statement

Elyse Neiman Seiter

I've been a professional TV director/producer for over 20 years, working in production and post-production on many unscripted series and one-offs. While working as a field producer on MTV's acclaimed documentary series, "True Life," I saw firsthand how bearing witness and holding space for my subjects while documenting their story with a camera made them feel seen, heard, and validated.

Having dealt with having cancer myself in my early 30's was my wake up call to live each day with intention and presence, and making films about that wake up moment for others is what I became passionate about and committed to.

I met Caryl through a mutual friend, John Burt, whom I met while we were both taking a year-long intensive course at the NT Zen Center called Foundations In Contemplative Care. There, we learned how to show up for others who are suffering, particularly at the end of life, with care, acuity of attention, and spaciousness. For my final project, I made a short film on my hospice care partner, and shared with my cohort my deep wish to document other end-of-life stories. In the fall, John suggested I connect with his friend Caryl. Caryl and I set up a zoom in October of 2024, and 3 hours later, we were best friends. We started production soon after, in November, and now, here we are.
